On to Torino and the party!

 Before we knew it, it was time to leave the beautiful Dolomites, and make our way back to the rental car place at Malpensa.  We were met there by Angie and Hans, who drove us to Via Po, in Torino, where we were to make our home for the next four days.  Max and Maryel and Forrest and Melissa had already arrived and checked in.  It was so great to have our whole family together again.  The apartment was quite lovely, but not exactly as advertised (two bedrooms, not three), so after the first night, Forrest and Melissa decamped to Angie's Air B&B, which was just down the street from ours, and had extra room.  

Randy had had the brilliant idea of holding a happy hour for all the people coming into Torino on Thursday the 18th.  Fortunately for us, Manuela Grasso, who had come on spring break with us and Elisa Raimondo in 1992, owns a bar named Margo, in the heart of Torino, so that's where we held it.  It was fabulous, with so many mutual friends, as well as family.

 To top off what has been a great time already, when we left Torino, Max had rented a car, and drove with us up to Baveno, where we planned to spend the next three days.  Angie and Sophie decided to spend a couple of days with us there, as well.  Baveno is every bit as lovely as we had remembered.  We stayed at the Hotel Romagna, which is right on the lake, and Angie was across the way at the Grande Hotel Dino.  We relaxed and just enjoyed ourselves there as the weather was beautiful.  One of the evenings, Max arranged for us all to go over to the Isola dei Pescatori for dinner.  They send a water taxi for you, which is just great.   After Max, Maryel and Angie left, we had one day left, which we spent doing the "Lago Maggiore Express", which consists of taking a train to Domodossola, then a panoramic cog wheel train to Locarno, Switzerland, at the northernmost end of the lake, then a ferry for a three hour ride back to Stresa, just south of ...

Charming Castelrotto

Day One of the Fabulous Fiftieth Birthday adventure, and we're off to a good start.  We had an uneventful boarding in Detroit for the Delta flight to Newark and it was reasonably easy to navigate our way to terminal B, where we were to catch the La compagnie flight to Milan.  We had never flown with this airline, so weren't sure what to expect, but once we were there, it's like its own dedicated space with their own TSA area, and then you get to the lounge, which was quite nice, and we waited for our flight. The flight was great, and once we got to Milan we caught the shuttle to our rental car place and we were off!  As we approached Castelrotto after a 4 hour drive, we could start to see how lovely this part of the world is.  Castelrotto is a perfect city to choose for a stay in the Dolomites.  It is not as well-known as some other cities, so less touristy, and probably a better value.  The city is as charming as you could imagine.  Our lodging, the G...

Celebrating our daughter

A Fabulous Fiftieth Birthday in Italy! Fifty!  We still can't quite believe that our little girl is turning fifty. But what a fabulous fifty years it has been. That beautiful baby has grown up to be the most impressive, strong, accomplished, compassionate, adventurous and fun-loving woman one could imagine. Always in search of the festive, Angie has decided to hold her fiftieth celebration in a place she fell in love with when she was only 16--Italy. Returning to the area where she spent that student exchange summer, Pinerolo, she arranged a four-day event that is sure to be a blast. Since we are going there anyway, we have added a few days onto either end of the birthday events, and are going to start our journey in the Dolomites.
