Making our way back to Merano

Day two of Angie's Fabulous 50th started out with us realizing our stupidity; we have been in numerous european hotels with electrically controlled metal shutters. But last night, thinking that all there was to cover the sliders was a gauzy curtain, we used our eye masks in order to sleep. This morning, we realized that this room is equipped with the metal shutter that not only block the light, but the noise as well. So much for our experience! Then we started on a search for a fan. There's no air conditioning in our lovely room in Castelrotto. When we went downstairs today for breakfast I asked the man at the desk if they had any fans that we could borrow just to move the air around in the room at night. It's not terribly hot but it gets really stuffy with no air conditioning and no fan. He looked at me like I'd lost my mind. "Fan! For what you need a fan?" That started us on a quest, which led us to the local grocery co-op and hardware store. They actually stock little plastic fans for about $30 so we bought one and that has made our life much better.

Following our little shopping excursion, we decided on making our trip to Merano today. That is a city we had seen a couple of years ago with Michael Valentine and we thought it was just charming. The ride there involves twisty, switchback mountain driving. I give Randy a lot of credit for his ability to do it with a manual transmission. Merano is just as beautiful as we remember and we had a really good time but there were just one small snafu. We asked Google to route us to the bar that we remembered going to. it's actually a little winery bar that we'd gone to with Michael. We thought we'd go back to the same place, as we knew approximately where it was and that would get us in the vicinity of where we wanted to walk around. Well, we got there and it's kind of a small piazza by a church, and there was the outdoor seating that we remembered from 2 years ago, so we parked the car where we saw some other ones. Later, as we were having our wine and our cheese and prosciutto plate we asked the waitress, "is our car okay there if we leave it while we go walking?" and she said "well, you might as well now because you're going to get a ticket anyway. They've already taken your picture when you came through the part where you're not supposed to be driving a car in this part of town." Oops! There was nothing to be done about it at that point, so I'm sure we'll be getting a ticket in the mail. This is not the first time we have found ourselves in pedestrian and locals only area in a small village.

On the way home we we somehow made a wrong turn, but it ended up better, as the road was actually a smoother, straighter way to go, and we just happened upon the most gorgeous vista at just the perfect time of twilight. The clouds were just lit up beautifully and the cliff faces were lit up beautifully. It was just amazing and now we're back in Castelrotto chilling on our balcony. It's quiet; it's beautiful; it's quaint and we're probably going to go out and walk around a little bit and maybe get a gelato. Buona sera.
